The following is our RESOURCE LIST which provides information for various agencies/clinicians that offer diagnostic testing services, ABA therapy, mental health therapy, PCIT therapy and other therapeutic treatment options for the neurodiverse community.

PLEASE NOTE: When you seek diagnostic testing services, ensure that the agency/clinician is providing you

FULL DIAGNOSTIC TESTING

(including a multi-page report with scores from various testing scales) and not simply an ‘assessment’, ‘evaluation’, or diagnostic ‘screening’.

For ABA therapy, insurance companies require FULL DIAGNOSTIC REPORTS before they will pre-authorize services.

Ask the agency/clinician BEFORE they provide diagnostic testing if the services they will render include scores from various autism TESTING scales and not ‘screening’.

FREE SERVICES WHILE WAITING ON TESTING

  • BIRTH TO 3 YEARS OLD
    • Visit https://msdh.ms.gov/msdhsite/_static/41,0,74.html and scroll down to find “Referral Form”. Print and complete the form, then mail form to: Mississippi State Department of Health, 570 East Woodrow Wilson, P.O. Box 1700, Jackson, MS 39215. You can find additional contact information on the form. Once it is received by the MS Dept of Health, the process (although it may be lengthy) will begin. They will perform an evaluation and offer services in child’s weak areas. They address speech, occupational skills, physical skills, and learning/self-help skills.
  • AGES 3 to 21 YEARS OLD
    • Most local school districts have the ability to take over from early intervention services at age 3. Through the school, an evaluation will be done to determine “eligibility” of services. THIS IS NOT A DIAGNOSIS. However, it does provide eligibility in the school that your child attends for the services available to students needing them. This evaluation will be reviewed and/or sometimes further evaluated as time passes by. An IEP (Individualized Education Plan) will be written yearly to direct his/her teachers in implementation of services. Parents are members of the IEP team which allows them to have a voice in the care that your child will receive. This process can be lengthy as well, but stay persistent.

SCREENING TOOLS vs DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT TOOLS

NOTE: When you are receiving a diagnostic exam, ensure the diagnostician is using autism rating scale assessments and not just screening tools.

Examples of screening tools for general development and ASD (autism spectrum disorder):
(These are typically not covered by insurance companies for pre-approval for ABA therapy. Check with your insurance company to see what their policy covers.)

  • Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ)
This is a general developmental screening tool. Parent-completed questionnaire; series of 19 age-specific questionnaires screening communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem-solving, and personal adaptive skills; results in a pass/fail score for domains.
  • Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales (CSBS)
Standardized tool for screening of communication and symbolic abilities up to the 24-month level; the Infant Toddler Checklist is a 1-page, parent-completed screening tool.
  • Parents’ Evaluation of Developmental Status (PEDS)
This is a general developmental screening tool. Parent-interview form; screens for developmental and behavioral problems needing further evaluation; single response form used for all ages; may be useful as a surveillance tool.
  • Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (MCHAT)
Parent-completed questionnaire designed to identify children at risk for autism in the general population.
  • Screening Tool for Autism in Toddlers and Young Children (STAT)
This is an interactive screening tool designed for children when developmental concerns are suspected. It consists of 12 activities assessing play, communication, and imitation skills and takes 20 minutes to administer.

Examples of diagnostic tools:

  • Autism Diagnosis Interview – Revised (ADI-R)
A clinical diagnostic instrument for assessing autism in children and adults. The instrument focuses on behavior in three main areas: reciprocal social interaction; communication and language; and restricted and repetitive, stereotyped interests and behaviors. The ADI-R is appropriate for children and adults with mental ages about 18 months and above.
  • Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – Generic (ADOS-G)
A semi-structured, standardized assessment of social interaction, communication, play, and imaginative use of materials for individuals suspected of having ASD. The observational schedule consists of four 30-minute modules, each designed to be administered to different individuals according to their level of expressive language.
  • Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS)
Brief assessment suitable for use with any child over 2 years of age. CARS includes items drawn from
five prominent systems for diagnosing autism; each item covers a particular characteristic, ability, or behavior.
  • Gilliam Autism Rating Scale – Second Edition (GARS-2)
Assists teachers, parents, and clinicians in identifying and diagnosing autism in individuals ages 3
through 22. It also helps estimate the severity of the child’s disorder. Reference for Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Website: https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/hcp-screening.html
